About

The department had its inception as a single Department from the academic session 1972, offering combined course in Life Sciences and was named as Department of Zoology and Biological Science. Later, the department was split into three sister departments of Zoology, Botany and Physiology with Dr. Nihar Ranjan Bardhan as the first HOD of the Department. The students of the department had shown remarkable success in academic and research advancement, which is still upheld by the present students alike. The Department has recently received grants under Biotechnology Branch of Department of Higher Education, Science & Technology and Biotechnology, Government of West Bengal under Biotechnology based Opportunities Offered to Science & Technology Departments (BOOST) scheme. Departmental faculty has research grants from various funding agencies such as DST, DBT and UGC. The Department of Zoology and Physiology has recently set-up a Common Research facility at the college with state-of-the-art equipment’s for molecular biology and cell biology research.

  • Experiential Learning through Educational Study Tours and Hands-on Practical Sessions: To emphasize the importance of practical knowledge alongside theoretical understanding, we organize educational study tours that expose students to real-world applications of their studies. Additionally, hands-on practical sessions are integrated into the curriculum, ensuring that students develop essential laboratory skills and gain a deeper understanding of the subject.
  •  Parents-Teachers Meetings: Parents-Teachers Meetings is conducted on regular basis to keep an open communication between the faculty and parents. Students' progress, the problems they face, the queries of parents, all are addressed to ensure a two way

  • Bridge Course at the Start of B.Sc. Curriculum: To ensure the smooth the transition from the high school curriculum to the graduation-level courses, Bridge course is designed. It paves a way for all students, regardless of their previous educational backgrounds, to start on an equal footing, and promotes a smoother academic journey.

Teaching Learning

  •  The Department has an Animal Museum which is a repository to many rare species. It is one of the very enriching heritage of our college resources which captivates the attention and interest of all.
  • Well-equipped practical classes with all adequate instruments are there to aid the effective learning of our students.
  • Study materials along with books and other resourceful add-on are provided to facilitate their learning.
  •  ICT use is practiced to incorporate the visual and technology based aids for active teaching.
  •  Bridge courses, student’s seminar, Remedial and tutorial classes are also organized for the benefit of the students. 
  •  Excursions and field trip are conducted to increase their awareness of the real-world applications of their studies.

Capacity Building

The Department organises regular student enrichment programs like student seminars, poster presentation, workshops, etc in diverse areas of Zoology. Students are encouraged out of the box thinking and innovations to help them dig deeper into the subject. Field trips: Various field trips are organised every year to arouse interest of students to various practical aspects of the course through in-field demonstrations. The field trips are done locally within West Bengal or nationally to various conservation sites.

  • The department organises webinar, seminars, workshops and invited lectures to ensure a deeper understanding of the subject.
  • Student seminars are organized by the department each year to nurture a practice of academic discussions; promote research aptitude and public speaking skills.
  • Students prepare wall magazine in every academic session to delve deeper into a topic and improve their presentation skills on it.
  • Field trips are conducted to enhance the understanding of their theoretical knowledge of the subject and its application in the real world.
