About

The Department of Sanskrit is the oldest department of the college. It was started along with the establishment of the College in the year 1887. Initially, an intermediate course on Sanskrit was introduced and from the year 1956 General Course affiliated to the University of Calcutta was introduced. Later, Honours Undergraduate Course was started in the year 2018. 
From the starting only the Department had very well experienced and distinguished faculty members who served the department. Pandit Ramchandra Bhattacharyya and Smt. Shila De were some of the eminent teachers of the Department.  At present, the Department has a total of four faculty members.
The department apart from teaching, it offers a Certificate Course on Spoken Sanskrit. Furthermore, organizes student seminars celebrates Sankar Jayanti and Gita Jayanti etc. for the overall development of the students. 
 

Best Practices

  • A Departmental Seminar Library is used by the students of both Honours and General students. 
  • Ancient manuscripts are shown to the students and they are taught how to read it so that they understand the scripts.
  • The department organizes a Bridge Course both for Honours and General Degree course. An Introductory course to help Students Bridge the gap between the school and college level. We help them to prepare mentally for higher studies and the future ahead. The syllabus of Bridge course encompasses the nature and scope of Sanskrit Study, Basic Knowledge of Vedic Literature, Kavya, Darsana, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, utility of the study of Sanskrit, Ayurveda etc.
  • The department carries out mentor- mentee programme as this enables the department to know its student and their problems as well as help and guide them in all possible manner. 
     

Teaching Learning

  • The Sanskrit Department to improve subject understanding of the students, to enhance their effectiveness and to help them build their career emphasizes primarily on classroom method lectures. However, they also use power-point presentations on laptops and this is followed by tutorial projects, group discussion, remedial classes, and extra classes.
  • The department encourages each student for participation and performance in student’s seminar, wall magazine write-up and various cultural programme etc. so that their confidence of public speaking gets improved and they learn the ability to clearly express themselves.
  •  The department also offers certificate course on Spoken Sanskrit so that the student’s communication skills in Sanskrit gets improved.
  •  The department shows ancient manuscripts and teaches them to learn and know many detailed aspects of the manuscripts as this will enable students to decipher the manuscripts and help them to know more about Indian culture.

Capacity Building

Seminars: Students’ Seminar: The Department also organizes Students’ seminars from time to time, to encourage students of the Department to indulge in research activities related to their syllabus at the Undergraduate level. Extension Lectures: The Department organizes Extension lectures for students by inviting eminent personalities of both national and international repute.

Academic Activities

  • The Sanskrit Department offers a Certificate Course on Spoken Sanskrit to its students with the aim to help and improve their skills of communication of Sanskrit and create awareness in Sanskrit speaking. 
  • The department teaches its students as how to read various ancient manuscripts as this helps the students to get familiarize with the manuscript and additionally gives first-hand information of ancient Indian culture. 
  • The department encourages the students to participate in different co-curricular activities such as student seminar and wall magazine write-up etc.
  • The department arranges programmes such as Gita Jayanti, Guru Purnima, Navinavarana (Fresher’s Welcome), Pravinavidaya (Farewell), Teachers’ Day and Shankar Jayanti wherein the students participate actively. 
  • Besides, these the faculty members continuously publish articles in various reputed journals and presents paper in numerous state-level and national level seminars. This has not helped the department to grow but at the same time the students are also encouraged to pursue higher studies in Sanskrit. 

Certificate Courses

The Department of Sanskrit organized a Ten  Days Spoken Sanskrit Course Siviram (30 Hours). From 19th -29th April 2022. With the Collaboration of Sanskrita Bharati, Dakṣiṇabaṅga.  All the students of this session has participated and  successfully completed the Course. They received a certificate after completing the course.
