Heritage Cell

Raja Peary Mohan College is a heritage college and in keeping with its status, it tries to spread awareness about the incredible history of its neighbouring areas. The college authorities have produced a definitive volume about the history of the college titled “Smarok Sombhar” celebrating the completion of 130 years of the college. The volume edited by Dr. Sudip Kumar Chakrabarty contains essays, reminiscences, and vignettes of many famous alumni regarding their attachment to the college. There are essays on various aspects of local history by stalwarts like Professor Sekhar Bandyopadhyay, thespian Chapal Bhaduri, writer Kinnor Ray, and essayist Mridul Bhattacharyya among others. It is a unique book and contains many rare photographs of events that have marked the journey of the college over 130 years. 

There is a Heritage Committee that tries to integrate bookish knowledge of heritage with actual fieldwork in order to make the subject more interesting and accessible to the students. With this aim in mind, it has also signed a MOU with the INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage), Hooghly chapter so that it gets help in this regard. The MOU was signed by Dr. Sudip Kumar Chakrabarty (Principal) on behalf of Raja Peary Mohan College and Dr. Ramanuj Konar, (Secretary INTACH Hooghly Chapter) on behalf of INTACH in presence of the IQAC co-ordinator, Dr. Sanjukta Bhattacharyya.

Already, it has kickstarted the collaboration with the organization of Heritage Quiz 2022 (for students from Class VII to X) at the college auditorium on Saturday, 22 October 2022. Dr. Pinaki De, Associate Professor of Raja Peary Mohan College was the quizmaster. Nine teams comprised of a total number of eighteen students representing nine different schools from the different parts of the Hooghly District participated, while their teachers were also present, in the event. Utsab Mahalanabis and Debesh Das from Chandernagore Sri Aurobindo Vidya Mandir won the First Prize and qualified at the West Bengal State Level where they can attempt to secure their spots for the National Rounds.

In addition to this, the students of the college also participated in the Heritage Volunteer Training Programme for College Students Organised by INTACH Hooghly Chapter on Wednesday 21 September 2022 at Government General Degree College, Singur. Ms. Purnima Datt, Principal Director of Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS), INTACH gave an introduction about the role of heritage education in lighting up the minds of young people. The students of our college who participated in the workshop were Dipa Mistry, Sreeja Guha Mullick, Disha Dholey, Tushar Patra, and Sirshak Dey (all students of the Department of History). They were accompanied by Sandipan Sarkar, Assistant Professor of History, and Dr. Pradip Mahapatra, Assistant Professor of Sanskrit. Dr. Pinaki De was a resource person who spoke about the importance of intangible heritage and the role it plays in the cultural dissemination of society at large.
