ABOUT OF DEPARTMENT:

  • After the introduction of undergraduate degree courses in the college all the three Bio-science subjects namely Zoology, Botany and Physiology were treated as a single Department named the Department of Zoology and Biological Sciences.
  • From the academic session 1972-73, the Department of Botany started its journey under the guidance of Prof Shyama Prasad Ganguly as Head of the Department. Later, in 1996-97 Honours course in Botany was introduced with affiliation from Calcutta University.
  • It is the youngest Laboratory based subject of the college and is still growing up to meet up its necessary infrastructural setup. Still the Department has been maintaining a very sound track record in the sphere of students' performances.
  • At present, the department has four full-time faculty members and one state-aided college teacher ( SACT-II) who are dedicated to creating all-around progress in teaching-learning and overall personality development of students.

INSIGHT TO THE DEPARTMENT :

The Department harbors some key facilities:

  •  A Well Equipped Laboratory: The department harbors laboratory which is equipped to undergo major practical's  that includes disciplines of botany like cryptogram and phanerogam studies, biochemistry , cell and molecular biology, genetics, fungal tissue culture and many others.  The laboratory  is  also furnished enough to carry out some minor research activities.
  •  A Museum :  That stores some well-preserved and interesting cryptogamic (bryophytes, pteridophytes) and phanerogamic (gymnosperms) plant specimens.
  • A Departmental Library : The department also has a large collection of text and reference books and journals on different subject topics for both Hons and General Students. The students are encouraged to go through this book during their off time to increase their habit of reading books rather than notes based education.
  •  ICT enabled Class Room : According the modern day need, the Department imparts education through ICT usage so as to make the subject as an interesting one to the students. Classes are aided with chalk board demonstration along with Power-point presentation to make it an interactive one.
  • Organising Regular Field Trips:  Botany being a natural science subject believes in imparting experiential learning rather than confining only to classroom teaching. Hence regular field trips are conducted as local and long field trips to study plants in their natural habitat.
  •

Best Practices

The department fosters in various fields:

BRIDGE COURSE

A Bridge Course for newly admitted Botany students is conducted every year before the commencement of the First Semester class. The main objective of the course is to bridge the gap between subjects studied at the H.S. level and subjects they would be studying in Graduation. So, a Bridge Course can be considered a fundamental gateway for providing information about the subject topics that will help their further studies.

Some Features of Bridge Course :

  •  The bridge course is provided through power-point presentation and ICT usage to make it attractive.
  • The bridge course is well organised encompassing : a vivid discussion on Plant kingdom, about CBCS format, what all to study in the forthcoming academic session, Botany as experiential learning- field trips; future outcome of taking Botany as undergraduate subject and many more.

SPANDAN - The Mushroom Cultivation Centre

The Department of Botany maintains a independent Mushroom Cultivation unit which acts as a :

  •  The college through department of BOTANY is slowly trying to develop a independent mushroom cultivation unit which will not only deal with mushroom cultivation but also production of spawn.
  •  “Spandan” is trying to encourage students to take keen interest in the field of mushroom as the modern need of the hour is mushroom for its nutraceutical value.
  • If the initial process gives better result Spandan has aimed for community development in near future through hand of students.
  • Presently we are developing it as a centre of  knowledge exchange.
  • Students are encouraged for development of enterprenuership

Capacity Building

The Department of Botany takes several initiatives for the capacity building of students. The Department organizes student seminars in every academic session under the supervision of faculty teachers for providing a platform for the students for expressing/sharing thoughts, ideas and knowledge on different subject topics after the introduction of the CBCS system in 2018. Students are also encouraged to participate in different seminars and workshops arranged by other institutions to enrich their knowledge. As a part of the curriculum (mandatory) Botany department arranges fieldwork and study tour (long and short) for educational purposes for both odd and even semester Hons. and General students to explore plant biodiversity of different altitudes/areas and study ecology under the guidance of faculty teachers. It familiarizes the students with the local/ native and exotic flora and ecology of different places/regions, the importance and threats of ecosystems due to natural and anthropogenic activities. It helps to enhance classroom learning by making real-world connections. This is also enhanced their critical thinking skill and gives students a chance to think about a topic or theme from a different perspective.

Academic Activities

Botany Department performs:

  • Induction & Orientation programme,
  •  teaching-learning, use of ICT in class room,
  • remedial class, class test,
  • Internal Exam,
  • college and university question setting and answer scripts evaluation,
  • teacher-parent meeting, mentor-mentee meeting,
  • student seminar, field work and
  • long and short botanical excursion.

Certificate Courses

Awards

The students of Botany participate in dance, song, and essay writing competitions organized by our college/other institutions. In 2022, an essay competition on the topic "Earth Day: Invest in our Planet” was organized by BSI (Botanical Survey of India) on 22/04/2022 (Friday) and our students participated and achieved 1st, 2nd and 3rd ranks.
