About

History is a dialogue between past and present. Without knowing the past tradition of our country and society we cannot make advancement towards future. Therefore The Department of History practices real history based on proper source materials. It is one of the oldest departments in our college when intermediate course was first introduced as early as 1887. In 1955, when the college was affiliated to B.A. standard of the University of Calcutta, History was introduced as an Elective subject in B.A. pass course. As demands from students grew, honours course was introduced in 2002 after a proper inspection by the team from the University of Calcutta with an intake capacity of 25. Since then the Department has been trying in many ways to bring about improvements qualitatively and in quantitative terms. Now there are two full time faculty and three State Aided College Teachers.

Best Practices

  • Every year students are encouraged to bring out a wall magazine of their own. Usually they select a topic mainly related to their syllabus and also current issues and contribute to make it a success.
  • A student seminar is also organized by the department, where the students speak on different topics both within and outside their curriculum.
  • However, the mentor-mentee programme has gone a long way to establish a deeper and confidential relationship with students. All faculties of the department mentor the students to know their difficulties, shortcomings and also their strengths and try to motivate them in the right path.
  • Documentation of students' family history and it's preservation is one of the many practices the department has been following for a long time. Every year new students are asked to write down their family accounts which focus on their original home, forefathers' education and means of livelihood and nature of family. The department uses the data to bring out the social composition of the learners. It also helps to know the student more intimately. Students, on their turn, learn how to approach a subject historically.
  •  Mentor-mentee programme, launched quite recently, has gone a  long way to establish a deeper relationship with students where the faculties act as mentor to advise students on various queries.

Teaching Learning

  • The faculty of the department  normally follow lecture method.
  • Apart from this procedure, tutorial and remedial classes and home assignment are also arranged by the faculty.
  • Teachers are available beyond class hours and during recess also for academic interaction with students.
  • LCD Projectors and computers are frequently used for comprehensive teaching. Innovative teaching also practices through project, study tour & wall magazine.
  • In lockdown period college developed an online portal where teachers can upload study materials and topic related videos and also developed an online platform for online classes.
  • The Department aims to highlight the importance of social science in today’s world in various fields and resolves to bring out the creative writing skills of the students.
  • The teachers always try to relate history to other branches of knowledge and thus establish its interdisciplinary value.
  • Atlas of different historical periods are used extensively to show the geographical orientation of a problem.
  • Information collected through internet is also made available to all by the teachers.
