The department of chemistry is one of the oldest and largest departments in the college. The Department of Chemistry is premier in the field of Chemistry under University of Calcutta. The Department was established in 1955. The Pass Course in Chemistry was started in 1964 and the Honours Course in 1967. The Department is renowned for the quality of its students and teachers. The department has an adequate number of efficient and competent faculties who cater the academic need of the talented students. The competencies of the faculties are reflected in the uniform brilliant results of the students over the last few years in the final university examinations. The faculties have also a distinguished record of research activities in the department.  

Best Practices

  • Departmental Library: Our department has a well-equipped seminar library with around 150 standard text and reference books in different discipline in chemistry which cover the syllabus of Undergraduate course in Chemistry. Books are issued for seven days and a maximum of two books are issued per students. 
  • Student seminar: Seminars by students are organized as part of the curriculum which helps them to improve their presentation skills and confidence level each year. There is a practice of delivering lectures on some important topics of Chemistry by senior students for other students as a Peer Group Learning program.
  • Mentor-Mentee Programme: The Department also caters to the individual students’ need through the Mentor-Mentee programme introduced by the College. These will help the students to explore the possibilities in future.
  • Laboratory facilities: The Department is well equipped with instruments like- UV-VIS Spectrophotometer, Digital Polarimeter, pH Meter, Potentiometer, Serological water bath.
  • Computer facilities: Internet enabled computers are available for the use of students. Students are using computers for their practical experiments. ICT based facility is available in the Department
  • Bridge Course: A bridge course is offered to the new students of 1st semester to narrow the gap between high school studies and undergraduate studies.

Teaching Learning

The Department has strength of 7 teachers, thus attention is given to a practically every single student. The Department blended interactive teaching-learning methods, comprising both direct blackboard-based teaching as well as using modern tools like IT, PPT based teaching. The Department is well equipped with UV-VIS Spectrophotometer, Digital Polarimeter, pH Meter, Potentiometer, Serological water bath. Internet enabled computers are also available for students. 
The students are encouraged to give Seminar on different topics with interactive sessions with other students. They are encouraged to participate in Seminars: present papers and posters. The Department organizes seminar introduce the students to the field of Science.

Capacity Building

  • Educational tours are conducted by the Department regularly.
  • Students of the Department take part in sports, Dance, Drama, Painting and Recitation at Various College and inter College competitions.
  • The students are encouraged to participate in scientific activities relevant to their subject in campuses outside the college as well. 
  • Wall magazine is published yearly.

Academic Activities

The Department organises regular student enrichment programs like student seminars, poster presentation, workshops, etc in diverse areas of Chemistry. The Department also organizes national seminar with the help of outside resource person time to time. Excursion and picnic are organised locally.
