About

The Department of Political Science is one of the oldest departments of our college. The journey began when it got affiliated with the University of Calcutta for the graduate programme in Humanities in 1955. However, Political Science was then part of the Department of Economics as it was known as the Department of Economics and Political Science, although Political Science was a separate subject. It was natural for the two departments to be segregated and the Honours course in Political Science in our college started in 1966 after it received permission from the University of Calcutta. Since then, the department has been offering both B.A. Honours and General course in Political Science.

The department over the years has advanced with time embracing the changes in the milieu and the syllabus and imparting knowledge to students on both theoretical and practical fronts. The aims of the department have always been

  • To provide every student with a conducive environment for studying and equip them with adequate knowledge and employability skills and interpersonal skills to gain meaningful employment or go for higher studies on completion of their studies.
  • To mould students as worthy citizens with moral & ethical values with a strong societal commitment to fulfil their obligations to the society and nation at large, and become good citizens.

Finally, the department has very well-experienced and distinguished faculty members since its establishment. The faculty members not only teach students in accordance with the syllabus but also mentor the students always to prepare them for life. At present, the department has a total of six faculty members who constantly enrich themselves (to help students) by participating in various state, national and international seminars, attaining workshops, publishing articles in reputed journals and contributing chapters in various edited books.

Best Practices

The Political Science Department aims to provide a platform for all round development of the students both in curricular and co-curricular activities. To achieve these aims, the Department pursues the following best practices:

  • A Departmental Seminar Library is maintained to be used by the Honours students.
  • A National Webinar in collaboration with the IQAC was organized on 20th August, 2020 on the topic " India- China Relations: Beyond and After Galwan Valley Clash”
  • The department selects a team mostly from the department’s students and prepares them to participate in the Youth Parliament Competition. Additionally, in the year 2022 our college hosted the competition and all the students actively participated in it.
  • Bridge Course is conducted for the newly admitted Honours and General students before the commencement of the 1st Semester classes. The main objective is to help students bridge the gap in the subject between school and college level. Additionally, during this course the students a made familiar about the subject, syllabus, and career potentials.
  • Add-on-Course titled “Climate Change and Public Policy: Indian Perspectives” was introduced by the department in the year 2022 for the students. The objective was to inform the students about climate change and the problems it is posing for the entire world and the measures taken by the world and India in combating the threats of climate change. Furthermore, students were also taught how to take basic measures to keep their surrounding clean.
  • Mentor-Mentee programme is carried out by the department every year with the prime objective of counselling and at the same time to provide guidance for their careers.
  • Remedial classes are regularly arranged by the faculty members of the department for academically weaker students.
  • Parent-Teacher meeting is also organised by the department with the prime objective to interact with the parents and inform them the overall progress of their children in the class and inform the parents as where their children can work for better progress and overall development.

Teaching Learning

The duty of a teacher is to teach. What to teach is available in the syllabus but how to teach is the most important part of the teaching-learning process. This process emphasises the knowledge and ability of the teacher as well as the knowledge and ability of the students.

  • Having said so, the faculty members of the department come from various universities with vast experience. Further, every teacher was a student before and his/her experience as a student has always guided the teacher to give the best and more. Consequently, the faculty members with this experience and vast knowledge manage, motivate, and mentor the students.
  • The teachers of the department follow both traditional and modern methods of teaching to help students learn and to bring about desired changes among the students. Discussion methods and interactive sessions are also held with the students. Apart from these Tutorial classes and remedial classes are conducted to help the students. Teachers also undertake class tests to check their progress. Teachers are available beyond class hours for academic interaction with students.
  • Moreover, every new semester is difficult for the students as they are to learn new papers, though linked with the previous semester’s papers, still students will be new to the new paper. This is the place where the faculty members of the departments help students to learn smoothly. Also, the teachers create a conducive milieu for the students to feel comfortable, encourage them and make learning fun. In short, the faculty members of the department leave no stone unturned to educate and impart knowledge to students in a conducive and humble manner.
  • Besides, the department employs ICT tools like power point presentation, MS Teams, WhatsApp, and Telegram in disseminating information and knowledge to the students.
  • The department has a well-equipped departmental library which contains reference books regularly required for students.
